There is no Japan anywhere on it, closest thing is the J on the neck stamp. I found another site that called it a Super Strat, I was thinking some kind of Contemporary as well. Either way it sounds great, plays nice, needs a couple of small parts to complete but it is not going anywhere. Anyone know where I can get knobs for this.

Inzaneman,
From what I can determine from the pictures, Fist is correct and this is a U.S. Contemporary Strat. Notice the neck heel is not HM like in that it is rounded (like a traditional strat), not straight like an HM. Also the neck is 22 fret with a 12" radius and the body is like a regular strat regarding its size, unlike the downsized HM Strat. It also appears to be a 1989 as the literature I have on this guitar says that is when they were introduced and they were made until late 1990, when Fender switched from using Kahlers to Floyd in early 1991. This particular model does incorporate the all access neck joint feature from the HM model. Is the scale length of the guitar is 25.5" or 25" like a HM?
Nice find btw.

name: John Thompson color: Blue Crackle neck: Maple serial #: E943022 modifications: pickups: removed Dimarzios, replaced with Seymour Duncans tremelo: blocked Kahler trem history: I am the second owner. In 1992 I traded an AK-47, with folding stock, for the strat and a power chorus amp. The AK may be worth more $ now but the guitar remains priceless and is still my favorite axe. image: If the picture is no longer hosted at the above link, search JohnRThompsonPhotography for the picture. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- John John R Thompson Photography

My HM information is as follows:
Owner: Timo Color: Pink S/N: E843399 Pickups: H/S/S Year: 1989 Fretboard: Maple?, 24 frets Bridge: Kahler
I am not sure about the fretboard. I bought it new in 1989. I believed it was made in US (as was printed in the bottom), but according to information in this site it seems to be made in Japan?
I have lost the manual, is there a pdf available somewhere?

Hi everybody ! I'm the owner of a HM Start "Heartfield Talon" vers. It's serial Number is K 003993. It is Black, HSH w.2 Dimarzio HBs and a Fender single coil, a Floyd Rose Pro, and the droopy headstock. When I bought it, the guitar was in a very bad condition. I had to take the floyd out and the electronics where simply not working. I'm actually working on it, I replaced the damaged floyd pro By an original one, and the guitar is actually EMG powered (81/SA/60) with some pu's I had in stock. But I plan to return it to factory condition, I just need the money ! Haha ;D

regarding the Fender HM656 - sorry don't know how to link to right chain of posts yet - I have the same exact guitar with flame maple, dimarzio, kahler and markings on neck and neck pocket identical - "HM656" I only recently realized it was model number - recently getting matches in search engine - i have seen a few online now. the HM 656 was in the Fender catalog in 88 i believe, almost top of the line out of japan. I was told by Fender that MSRP was around $900 in 1988, so this was pretty high end guitar. it sounds great but difficult to set up.

I just found a Fender STRAT HM, digital logo, Serial no. KO22109, body is Bluestone, Rosewood fingerboard and OFR with an added EVH dropped D tuna. Dimarzio bridge pickup, 2 Fender single coils. Spent 4 hours adjusting and cleaning it up. It has the Made in Japan sticker on the neck. The 5 way is crazy super switch, positions; 1- bridge humbucker, 2- Middle SC and Bridge side hum. 3- all pickups. 4- neck SC and neck side hum. 5- neck SC. 1 volume and 1 TBX tone control. Possibly this guitar could be for sale. Alan

Hi all, I just bought a Beautiful White 1988 or 89 HM Strat. (It has an E842081 ser #.) I will list the other things about this great guitar. It is White with a Rosewood Fretboard, has the original SSH pickups, 1 Volume 2 Tone knobs, 5 way selector switch, coil tap switch and the Kahler Spyder tremolo. Overall it is in very good condition with very little to no play wear on the frets or fretboard. The worst wear is some light buckle rash on the back. I was lucky and bought this from the first owner, (sort of) his dad gave it to him in 1991 as a birthday gift. His dad had bought it new a year or so before. This guy fell on hard times and needed the money. He was concerned that I might modify it in some way, but I assured him that I would not and give it all the same love he did. I am just learning to play guitar at age 50 but have 14 guitars and I have to say this is one of my favorites! This has to be a very over looked guitar.
