That seems like it's in pretty good shape. I have no particular reason to believe this, but I bet it's an E8.

My sonic blue HSS is an E8 as well. I believe the sonic blue HMs were from the first year of the HMs production along with razzberry (hot pink), white, black, & light pink. I think the chrome reds, midnight blue, and the stone paint jobs came at the end of the production of HMs 1989-1992. Just my experience.

The ST-556 is the common prefix for HMs as we know.
The J refers to Japan I think. They probably added that to the much later/last few years run, of which your Tele is one.
R is code for Rosewood.
