I don't particularly dig that headstock on a HM Strat. I'm partial to the Strat head I guess. Oddly, I would like the hockey stick headstocks if they were a reverse headstock like on the Heartfield Talons with the sabretooth inlays. But then again, you weren't asking were you?

I need some help. Can anybody here help me justify buying that Blue HM? I mean, I don't see too many of the Floyd Rose HM's with the digital logo. True, it's got a nasty gash in the paint job, but that's in the back, after all.
So I really need some help. To talk myself OUT OF BUYING that guitar.
No, wait, I really would like to have it.
Just kidding. But no really. Hahaha. But seriously.

So did you get it? I'm currently trying to convince someone to get the red one any problems or downfalls I should know about it?

No, I have to exercise some self control. I've got 3 HM's right now with two more in the works. As George Bush Sr. used to say, "Wouldn't be prudent."
I just noticed (and The Beast confirmed) that all those hockey stick headstock necks are made with scarf-joints. I'm not a big fan of those, and much prefer the one-piece necks on the other HM's. I'm sure it's still a really nice guitar.
Even though it's missing two frets. haha.

20 yrs or so ago when I built my first guitar I did some research on this and was under the impression that a scarf joint neck was stronger than a one piece neck and saved wood when making a angled back headstock like on the hockey stick HM's compared to the flat headstock like on the standard strat headstock HM's. And it seemed different manufacturers had several different headstock pitch's and that attributed to their tone. Keep in mind this was pre-internet days so it was hunting down book and magazine articles. So what do y'all know or think about scarf joint vs. one piece neck strength, angled vs. straight angle headstock's and why you prefer one over the other? I have both and never had any problems out of either. Sorry if I forgot to mention that sometimes I tend to ramble on. lol

Good question!
I've been told Ibanez ran into serious trouble with their original RG series (which featured scarf joint necks). Apparently a lot of 550's never survived the 80's because of neck warpage issues. Ibanez changed this on most of the RG line, it's why they use the 3 and 5 piece necks now.
I bought an RG220 scarf joint neck not too long ago, and I'll grant you it had been sitting in a garage in Phoenix for a few years. BUT THE SCARF JOINT WAS COMPLETELY SEPARATED FROM THE REST OF THE NECK. Kind of sort of held on by the fretboard, which was also separated from the neck in places.
I've heard Jackson's rarely have a problem with their scarf joints. On the other hand, I bought a Yamaha neck (RGZ) a few years ago, and it was warped at the scarf joint and I ended up throwing it away.
All the luthiers I've met prefer non-scarf joint necks. That joint is simply there to save money by not having to use a larger piece of wood to carve out an angled head.
You'll notice that no manufacturer is charging extra for necks with scarf joints on them, but most are charging extra for one-piece or five-piece necks.
Now I'll be interested to hear what everyone else has to say!
The angled neck I'm not as sure on, but one professional guitar builder has told me that he's never seen a straight Fender headstock break, but he's seen plenty of angled headstocks break.

EEK...Starting to get a bit paranoid about the scarfed neck on my aluminum guitar now. Seems like it would be a good joint, but I guess it depends on how it's implemented.

My HMT Tele has a scarf joint, but remains unwarped or separated. It appears the only thing keeping it in there is the glue, the wedge shape of the joint between the neck & fretboard, and the sheer will from being of the HM Series.
After all this talk about scarf joints, all I want to do is put on an Ascot, fire one up, and watch Scooby Doo reruns. RUH ROH! ZOIKS!

R.I.P. S+F+D! ROTFLMAO!!!
It would have been better if Faux Wilma had done the Wendy O. Williams (Plasmatics) thing with no shirt or bra, just the electrical tape "X"s over her nipples.
