Just figured I would browse around ebay today to check whats for sale. 3 hm strats. First is a teal H/S/S model with a kahler trem and rosewood fretboard tinyurl.com/cqayxuSecond is what I think used to be a teal model, that was refinished in white. This is also H/S/S with a kahler and rosewood fretboard. The locking nut has been partially removed for whatever reason. Also seems like the trem is blocked. tinyurl.com/caqcpqLast is a Black H/S/S with a maple fretboard and a kahler trem. This one appears to be all stock, besides the coil tap switch. tinyurl.com/cdqz28

I decided to look under 1989 strat and look what I found! tinyurl.com/d8852bYes, a digital logo hm with a floyd, and bluestone finish! It's has one bad chunk out of the back though. Depending on the price it could be a great deal for someone!

Wow. Very interesting about that last guitar. When I punched in that serial number on the Guitar Dater Project, it says:
Guitar Info Your guitar was made at the Fuji-gen Plant (for Fender Japan), Japan in the Year(s): 1989 - 1990
So now I'm thinking all the E8 and E9 serial numbers are truly Japanese made, and the ones MIJ but assembled in the USA have a unique serial number convention. (There was no listing for this serial number under USA made Fenders.)

I agree with you on that, I thought it was unusual the neck plate was the fender usa, but stamped right above it is Made in Japan! I've also never seen an hm with a serial # beginning with I. Hopefully whoever buys it will find this site so we can get more information on it. I think the guy who is asking over $600 dollars for the teal with rosewood fretboard hm is overpricing it. I mean, it's in good condition and all, but over $600 seems like a lot compared to what most hm strats go for.

Yeah, it is unusual for sure! All the HM's I've ever seen have the Made in USA neckplate, even if they're clearly made in japan.
And yeah, I think it's overpriced, too. It'd have to be in mint condition to be worth that. Since the recession started, I've seen a lot of people listing their HM's for $100, $200 even $300 over market value, most of them highlighting the Made in USA claim, even though they're not. The plus side is that most of them don't sell for the inflated prices unless they are in very, very good condition.

Yeah, lately people are trying to squeeze all the money they can get out of their stuff. It's too bad really; they'll just have to keep re listing the auction.

I hear you NYE. The owner of the shop I go to has his vintage RG550 on the wall for $900. I asked him why he wanted to sell it. And he said, "I really don't. That's why I have it priced so high."

^ Well if you were to ask about an RG over at the UG forum. You'd be told about how much they suck! I rarely post over there, but I do read threads from time to time to get a laugh or two!

Is that the Ultimate Guitar forum? Why do they hate RG's?

Yeah that's the forum! I am not sure why but I have seen several posts where they are downing some of the RG models. I swear some of the shit is funny as hell. THere was a post last week where someone asked about setting up a Floyd Rose. And a long time member replied and said that Floyd's suck and it's all a bunch of hype why people like them!
And for some reason seems like everyone there loves Fender Squire's and recommends them to any new guitar player! Beats the hell outta me. I just grin and keep my mouth shut. One guy in particular thinks he knows everything.....and brags about his Squier that he has put about $400 into "upgrading"! lol

hehe. Sounds like Harmony Central - where they constantly rave about their Squiers and Rondos and whatever other under $200 guitars they've purchased.

i read somthing interesting concerning certain serial numbers that refer to the japan plant but are actually USA made HM's. Some of the HM's made in the USA used componants from the Japan plant. So there are a series of SN that would refer to Japan although they were manufacture in the USA. This was due to the selling of fender in 88 89? Well found it intersting to say the least. may answer why there are som many HM's with japanese serial numbes but made in the USA neck plates. peace, mark

On the main site www.heavymetalstrat.com - I posted an article all about Fender in the 80's. It's a good read. It's on the Background page.
