I got a friend that is wanting to get into CNC. He, like I, does not know much of anything about them. Perhaps I know more than he does! lol
Well anyways, he is wanting something that will cut wood and at least up to 1/4" aluminum. He plans to make some kind of base plate things for the cable/video industry. Something he once was in as his own business. This was until he got hit by a logging truck and is in a wheelchair now.
So....he is just talking right now seeing what is out there. I am thinking his budget is $7,000 or less from the way he is talking. BUT....."we" want something with at least a X axis travel of 18" or so. You know.....so it can cut guitar bodies out! ;D Perhaps something running MACH3? Or something you can recommend that is not too f'ing complicated to operate.
Got any recommendations? Cause all the stuff I have read so far online leaves more questions than answers.

If I could find a CNC for $7000 I would have already bought it! ;D
Probably not, but yeah, they're super expensive, and I'm not sure what you can get for that price.
Possibly a Bridgeport with CNC added, not sure of the max travel.
Maybe even a small CNC Router?

Yeah.....I am not looking for an industrial machine like what you are using at your work. lol I have seen many machines in this price range, albeit mostly used one.

A buddy of mine bought a small CNC to do wood guitars - I think he paid $2,000 or so? Part of that was the software.
To my knowledge though, he's never even fired it up yet. hahaha. That's actually surprising though, as he's one of those guys that can literally do anything - and usually do it well the first time, too!

Jim can you tell me or find out what he has. Guess he can't give any feed back on it since he hasn't used it. But I could read reviews.

No problem. I'll be talking to him in the next couple days and will ask.

Hey, you may be in luck. Here's what my friend had to say:
Mine is a Sidewinder CNC. The unit was $2500 and the Vetric software was about $2000. If he is serious, I would certainly be interested in selling mine as I just don't think I am ever going to find the time to use it. I could give him a really good deal on the package.

Hey Gary, I'm going to his house Monday night after work - I can find out the model number and maybe get some photos then.

Thanks Jim! I mentioned this to James. He is interested in it. But also interested in finding a local machine shop to give him a quote on making them. At least to start off so he can see how well those things will sell. I hope he does not go that route though.
