I've been looking for a new neckplate to replace the severely corroded one on the back of my 1988 black HM strat. Originals are obviously few and far between with asking prices of £50+ ($80) for a beat up second hand ones on ebay. However, I've seen new contoured Fender neck plates on US websites which look very similar and I believe are the standard size and shape for the Jeff Beck Fender Toronado. Question is, does anyone know if they are compatible? They may be chrome instead of black but I'd buy one and try it out if the US stores didn't charge such extortionate shipping to overseas buyers (4 to 5 times the value of the plate!!) so I'm reluctant to just take a punt. Trying to add an image but can't figure it out. ![]() [/img] |

I've heard in the past that those plates are indeed compatible.
A second opinion is welcomed!

I used a new Fender Deluxe neck plate on one of my rebuilds and it was an exact replacement.

Great stuff. Thanks for the tip. I ordered a Fender Chrome Deluxe neckplate 005-9209-000 from Allparts in the UK who shipped it in from the states. Spot on fit. I think it's going to look better than the original. I've been trying to find replacement neckplate screws as the originals look shit next to the shiny new neckplate. The new Fender ones are too light a gauge (I think they're number 8's). A guy at Allparts discussed this with Fender who said they stopped using the heavier screws back in the late 80's. I guess (according to what I can gather from various forums) that's around the time Fender moved back to the States from Japan. Anyway, my screws are 1 3/4" oval head Phillips drive. Thread dia' 4.54mm, root dia' 3.40mm, no shank, thread pitch 14 TPI (A US imperial thread measurement). The head diameter is 8.62mm but now I'm fitting a new neckplate, 8.2mm would probably suit better. I've totally failed in finding straight replacements so I'm sending off the originals for rechroming. However, If anyone knows where to source screws as I've described, I'd be grateful to hear.
