Hi guys, I don't own an HM Strat at the mo (currently looking for one), but thought in the meantime you might be interested in this. It's a VH150 made by Stormshadow guitarworks, a small custom builder here in the uk. It has an American alder body, maple neck and board, bare knuckles 'cold sweat' pup, original Floyd, Gotoh machines and purple/green flip paint. It's currently my main guitar(at least until I get an HM Strat!) and plays and sounds great. ;D Attachments:

Thanks! I think it's a 12" radius which I think is faithful to the 80's Kramers? Not sure if that's right so please correct me if I'm wrong!

Nice guit, I really like the look of guitars with one pickup, it's less cluttered or something....

Thanks, yeah I know what you mean, I like the uncluttered look you get with just the one pup too, but it does limit the versatility a little. Attachments:

I have a Charvel Model 2 I was thinking of using in an 80s coverband....but the single pickup thing is a big stumbling block for me. I am so used to HSS or HH. Also it has an EMG81 in it, which is useless for songs needing clean sounds.

The other guitarist in the band has a Charvel model 1, it plays superb, I'd have bought it off him but for the fact it has a vintage trem setup. Still tempted actually..... but the wife would kill me.

I love Charvels. I am kind of a Charvel whore... Got two Model 6s, a model 2 in black with Kahler (and pink strings) and a 750XL. And a Charvel 2008 Production Mode (So-cal). Truth be told though, even though I am in an 80s band, I am finding myself gravitating to the type of guitar I started out on. 21 fret strats with vintage frets (or med jumbo at the most). Crazy....eh? I am seriously thinking of using a bog standard mexi or other strat for all these songs that demand a single hum Floyded guitar in neon colours. But as you say, stratz, vintage trems can't recover so well from a billion semitone divebomb. And I do them quite a lot!

I like the look of that StormShadow guitar! Looks like a real shredder!
My advice would be to take your time and find the HM that you feel really good about (which it seems like you're doing). A lot of these were treated roughly in the 80's, and even more were "yngwied" or modded in unthinkable ways. However, there are still plenty of good ones for sale on a regular basis and your gut should be able to tell you when you've found a winner.

Thanks heem6, it does tend to make you play that way when you pick it up ;D It's good advice about the HM too. There does seem to be a lot of abused examples, and the one I looked at the other day at Johnny Roadhouse just didn't feel right as you say. Within about 30 seconds my gut feeling was I didn't really want it even at a reduced price. After thinking about it a week later I still feel the same so I know it's not the one.

Yep, can't resist them divebombs! ;D I love standard strats too Nick, I have a highway one with an hs3 in the bridge and a yjm in the neck. Love the neck on this thing, it's like a halfway point between a standard strat and a full shred neck with it's 12" radius and 43mm(1 9/16") at the nut. I like to 'unleash the fury' on it from time to time lol!
