At a cool place called "The Old Brewery." It's set in a nicely kept office/ industrial park on the North Side of Phoenix. There's an actual brewery, and they open up the warehouse for punk bands and stuff. There's a loading ramp on the far end and you can walk out and have smokes or get some semi fresh air during the shows. I showed up and met some friends about 9pm, after the first band had already finished. A punk band, all over 70 years old, called "One Foot in the Grave."
God-awful Nu Metal band then took at least 45 minutes to setup their equipment and take the stage. The guitar player looked like a cross between Mick Mars and the puppet master dude from the low budget movies. Heinous.
The next band was a Ramones cover band and they were really good. The guitar player put on a wig and looked just like Johnny. They had the crowd dancing and smiling.
Then at 12:30am, the main band took the stage. Killer Pussy, a legendary punk/alternative band that apparently ruled Phoenix in the early 80's. The guitar player looked like he was about 80 years old, in a wrinkled shirt and nylon baseball hat and we were like "WTF?" But the intro sounded great with two keyboards/synths adding swirl and atmosphere. It quickly became apparent the guitarist had been heavily into drugs (prolly METH) as he kept on talking to the audience into his mic. Like the creepy old guy you try to get away from on the bus. So then the lead singer - babe Lucy LaMode - comes in through the loading bay on the back of a Harley! Guys are running in front of them yelling at people to get out of the way as this loud ass bike pulls right up to the stage and she makes her entrance. Almost ran my ass over! haha.
They were a pretty good band, even the guitarist, although he kept ruining the momentum by talking between songs and holding things up futzing with his equipment, making them wait to start the next song. Apparently they even had one of their songs in the soundtrack to the movie "Valley Girl." Pretty soon it was 1:05 and we all took off, even though there was more show left and I have a feeling Lucy was planning to put on her trademark two-sizes-too-small-nurses uniform later in the show.
It's fun going out to see the bands, but I really don't understand why venues book four bands in an evening, forcing the headliner to go on 12:30am. The bands don't like it, and everyone I talk to never wants to see the opening bands anyway. Maybe one, but that's it.
Anyway, it was their 30th Anniversary and I got to be part of it at least and there were many attractive ladies in attendance, so that wasn't bad, either.
