The venue was about half-full as Dream Theater went on about 7:30pm. I wasn't expecting much as I'm not a fan. They opened with "As I am" which was a pretty rockin' uptempo song. Kinda liked it. They continued with good material and won me over a little bit. Heavy, heavy music and it sounded great with Petrucci using his wah wah pedal tastefully on several rhythm riffs. He did a lot of "blizzards of notes" with alternate picking and the crowd loved it. Here is their opening song:
Maiden played "Doctor, Doctor" by UFO as they always do for the last song before they go on. The crowd loves it.
On this tour Maiden came out with a lot of songs from more recent albums, which caused a lot of grumbling. My friend commented that she didn't recognize any of the songs for the first hour and 15 minutes. It didn't bother me because I don't recognize any of the songs anyway. haha. Besides that, they're Maiden - and I think they're pretty incapable of putting on a bad show. They came out and kicked ass and the crowd was really enthusiastic.
One of the highlights for me was this song, El Dorado.
Bruce still runs from one side of the stage to the other, and does the jump over the monitors thing - it's amazing he's in such good shape. All the guys looked happy and healthy - Dave Murray maybe a little "healthier" than last time. haha. His guitar playing was amazing and melodic, much more distinctive than Adrian or Janick.
Why is Janick there again? Oh yeah, to dance like Billy Squier during the show. lol
Crowd favorite was "The NUmber of the Beast" which was the first encore. A 12-foot tall Eddie came out on stage and was taunted by Janick with his guitar while Eddie waved his arms around. This version of Eddie looked more like the "Predator" and with a green hide/skin, so that also put a few people off. It was cheesy, but they stopped Eddie from exiting the stage and instead gave him a guitar, where he stopped and played air guitar for a few. Iron Maiden is so damn cool they can get away with stuff like that without being corny and we all loved it.
This wasn't as exciting as the last tour when they recreated the "Somewhere Back in Time" tour from 1985, but it was still a damn good Maiden show.
