I just purchased a Squire HM that was stripped down to nothing (neck, body, and floyd) for $30. I'm going to refinish it and rebuild it through the winter, and I figured I'd start a thread and just post updates as it's coming along. I'm going to rebuild it as a stock Fender HM (not the squire), copy the electronics, etc. I'm torn on keeping the original squire neck, which is shaped pretty funky, or adding a fender neck to make it look more like the actual HMs. Thoughts? Anyways, here's my Squire: Someone really did a number on that finish. I'm stripping it now. It seems to be coated in some sort of plastic. I left Stripeez on it for days and all it did was make it shiny, so I've resorted to heat, and it's coming along slowly, but nicely.

Cool project! I would prefer the Fender headstock, but it would be an expensive upgrade and probably would have a thicker profile.

The neck on it is real thin. Almost like a jackson (but not as drastic) or a wizard II. It's a nice neck, but looking at it just doesn't say "Fender", you know? I might stick it on another body I have around and make some sort of franken axe.
The neck won't be too much of a problem. I can reshape a headstock pretty well, and my friend makes vinyl decals. So I'm thinking of buying an old Starcaster neck or something and reshaping and finishing it to look like the Fender HMs. My only concern is finding one routed for the floyd nut.
Quick side note, those Starcaster necks are beautiful and are dirt cheap if anyones in the market for a fender neck I'd really recommend them.

I just registered to this site. I want to ask you something. You have the Squier HM sanded down right? Can you tell what type of wood it is made of? I had a Neck Thru Squier HM in Dark Metal FLake Gray. I sold it but wish I didn't. But now I am in the process of purchasing another Neck Thru Squier HM in the same color. Found it again. Lucky Me. I have a Bolt on also. I was curious as to the type of wood the body is made of. Someone said it was ply-wood. Anyway, good luck on your project. I'm starting a similar Squier HM project soon to. I'll post the progress too.

Also Dann...if you are going to repaint a body. There is no need to sand it down to the wood. Just drop fill any dents and dings and prime and paint. I learned this the hard way myself once.

I believe that there is an example of "layered wood construction for enhanced resonance" - as Kramer Guitars used to say!
