Hi, new guy here, who knows less than nothing but what I can read on the web. I do not play but my 18 y/o son does and I found a black HM locally for $500 (including a Korg G3 pedal in the box and a soft case). No manuals or wrenches. Serial # is E843342, said to be a '88 or an '89. Rosewood fretboard. The thing looks new, barely a scratch, original down to the "F" knobs by the look of it. Here are 4 pictures. s711.photobucket.com/albums/ww118/pblarus/HM%20Strat/I'm wanting to buy this for my son for Christmas. He's been playing 5 years on a "starter" guitar (incredibly, his favorites are classic rock bands like Led Zep and Pink Floyd - I know the words to his favorite songs!), says he wants a Strat, and I need it to be used and affordable and a keeper for a lifetime. Like I said, I don't play, so I can't "road test" it myself. But it sure looks cherry. BTW, how do you tell what kind of pickups those are and if they are original? Anything else I should know from what the pictures show? The current owner says he worked at a music store about 10 years ago, this one came in on trade, and he bought it then. Played it a lot at first but it has mostly sat for the past few years. Says he needs the cash to fix his car. Won't budge off $500. Does this look like a fair deal? Any help is MUCH appreciated!

Mint condition HM's don't come along every day but they are out there. If it's as nice as you say $500 is reasonable.
I'm biased because my favorite HM (out of 4 I own) is an E8.
If there is no tremolo bar, be aware that a new bar from Kahler is around $30. Pickups look original to me, 2 Fender Single Coils and a DiMarzio Super 3.
If there's no obvious rust or other damage, the only thing I'd confirm is that the neck is straight. Also check for cracks or repaired breaks on the neck, just to be sure. If you can (just like with a used car), show him the money, tell him you'll buy it if the neck is straight and ask him if he'll accompany you to a music store or guitar repair shop where they can verify the neck is straight. You might have to make a call or two to find a store nearby with someone available, but it would be worth it since new HM necks only come around MAYBE a couple times a year on eBay and sometimes go north of $200.
Please let us know what happens. If the neck is straight, that will be an awesome guitar!

Thanks, heem6. The guitar is now at a local shop, where the tech there will check it out tomorrow. If all goes well, I'll be buying it. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again!

Hello! The luthier said it was just great. Went ahead and had him set it up with new strings and he did all the things they do to bring it into tip-top adjustment. They were pretty impressed with the instrument -- said it's like new and good for 20 more years at least. Thanks for the help -- this will be a big Christmas for my son!

Oh man, that's great! Glad it worked out for you. Your son is lucky to have a dad that would go the extra mile to get him a really nice present like that!
If you take some nice pictures of it we'd love to see them.

It's in a box, wrapped in Christmas paper, but when it comes out I'll get some pictures -- I'm not sure how good!

Your son has a very cool dad. My parents had the mindset that guitars were the gateway to hell. Never encouraged me to chase my dreams. So, here I am at 43, finally learning to play. I'm sure your son will really enjoy the guitar!

^ All of what he said! Well.....except I will be 40 in January. VERY cool of you to buy that for your son and encourage him in music. IMO, that guitar is on par with just about any pro level guitar out there. Although I am a little more partial to the old Kramer and Charvel guitars from that era. I know that hurts Jim, please don't ban me! lol
