Folks,
OK, this is a follow-on thread from my one before Christmas...
heavymetalstrat.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=ebay&action=display&thread=455
For those who showed an interest.......
Well, I am ashamed to admit that my primary interest was going to be to strip the pick-ups out of the body for parts but 2 things changed my mind:
Firstly, the body arrived and it was 'awesome' - the marbling is a delicate gold on black and the whole thing is an overspray on raspberry (very traditional Fender). It's pretty dirty but otherwise not in bad nick except in several places where it looks like it's been hit with a hammer (!) - so I fell in love with it.
Secondly, having seen what has been done to this, I decided to leave my authentically original '88 Teal well alone.
So what was 'parts' has now become a 'project'. Initially then I was disappointed that I didn't go for the other body that still had the Kahler. However, in contact with the seller, he said that was bought by the same person who bought the neck (someone in Nottingham, UK) - so that made me feel better as it seems he is putting it back together. Actually, the seller turns out to be OK - he has (had) a few HM Strats so he isn't asset stripping for cash - he even gave me back £5 on the postage!! So Christmas cheer all around!
I have some photos to post - on a previous message I had an 'attachment' option on the screen but I don't have it now - how do I get that back??
Anyhow the pick-ups seem to work - single coil resistance 5-6 kohm, DiMarzio ~26kohms - I tested them out by wiring them up in situ and holding my other HM Strat alongside - picked up the sound OK (but couldn't really tell what it was like). The electrics also work therefore and look original, so project is on.
My rules are:
- this is not a restoration but a rescue - looking to make a whole guitar again from parts that are otherwise surplus and unused
- on the cheap, the challenge is to re-create a HM Strat from unused bits, not to 'buy' one
- not to make anything worse, ie not permanently modify or damage parts such that they are subsequently not useable by someone else if I never finish
So, I need:
A neck - ideally - HM Strat, maple (looks cool with the black body), original 'splash' logo. I fear this is going to take some time - I have been searching around for any other 25" scale necks but haven't found a trace (except Warmoth do a 7 string one but that would be missing the point).
A bridge - ideally - Kahler spyder. These do come up occasionally in the US (but which adds postage & import) - does anyone know if something else fits in the meantime - without re-siting the posts (distance between them 74mm).
It did occur to me that perhaps I could get a 25.5" neck and re-site the bridge back a bit but that also feels like it's not a HM Strat and isn't helping all the other orphan parts to find a body.
So - if anyone has any surplus parts up for grabs and would like to contribute to rebuilding a HM Strat please get in touch (and I'll let you borrow it when it's finished!). Otherwise if you see something - please give me a shout (remember - cheap).
One of the results of all this that my wife is now convinced I quite mad buying bits of guitars, so won't try to stop me (neeaahahaha). On the other hand - 'Hmmmm - Patience I must learn'.
Cheers, T.
