Hi guys. What a great site! I've recently picked up a single humbucker HM Strat as a project - it won't replace the pink HSS I owned from new and foolishly sold in the 90's, but I'm looking forward to spending some time with this new one.
The first and most pressing issue I have is the bridge. That old Spyder is shot, with some parts missing. I know parts are available, but I want to give the old girl a complete facelift so I'd like to slap on a completely new bridge. An OFR for preference.
I know the posts are different, but the spacing seems to be the same. Does anyone have practical experience with this? Will I be able to sink Floyd posts into the existing rout? Maybe even use the existing post bushes?
Thanks for any help!

Welcome to the forum! I wish you'd sold that pink HSS to me lol! Regarding the bridge I know they did fit OFR's to later HM strats but I'm not sure if it would be an easy swap for the Spyder, I'm sure one of the more clued up members will put you right. It would be great if you could post some pics of your project from time to time to show how it progresses. ;D

I don't know a good way to explain it, but the bridge post design is completely different on the Spyders and Floyds. They are not interchangeable.

Is the spacing the same? If so, you could just change posts too I think? (I may be wrong though)

Thanks for the input guys. I know the posts would need changing to mount a Floyd, I was curious if anyone had done it and could offer some advice before I take the plunge myself.
On closer inspection, I think the Spyder rout might need enlarging to accommodate the Floyd but I've yet to take precise measurements. If routing is needed, at least it will help me to decide whether to respray the body I guess!
I'll keep you updated as I progress. Any further advice / opinions very gratefully received!

Hi
Saw your question and it prompted me to join the board.
Bought a very relic-ed big strat logo HSS HM strat a few years ago. It had been converted to take a Floyd trem and nut at some stage. Looks like quite a neat job with 2 holes drilled thu the back of the neck for the nut and a small amount of neat routing to the front cavity. They had not repainted and the routing is hardly noticeable (compared to all the dings). Probably had an OFR fitted at that stage. But when I got it it a black scrappy looking licensed Floyd and gold coloured nut - yuk.
Recently fitted a S/H Floyd and (Jackson) Nut. Read up a lot on this forum and other places about neck radius etc but all worked out OK as follows. This is what I can tell you:
Looks like the inserts may have been replaced for the FR (small bit of paint missing) but the were no holes so if they were replaced they went in the same holes. FR posts have very fine thread - don't know what Kalher posts are like. Intonation (the critical bit) worked out fine though I can tell that the low E and A are not quite right, but its a pain to adjust intonation on a FR so I have not got round to fixing it.
As I said above there is a very small amount of cavity routing but I reckon the FR may fit without it. I shimmed some of the outer saddles (E A and E I think) because the FR radius seemed too tight.
It did not look like the strat neck had been cut any deeper for the replacement nut. I found that a Jackson BH 43 nut from RR3/Kelly neck I'm using on my next project seemed spot on in terms of height and radius. Not sure whether the real FR nuts will fit well.
Will take some photos tomorrow and figure out how to post them.

Great post, AussieAxeMan!
As long as the posts are 74mm apart, you should just be able to take the new Floyd posts, find a drill bit to match them and punch new holes with a drill press. You would need to route a bit at the lower part of the Floyd "wings" as AMM said and should be good to go.
I routed out an Ibanez body this way. I put construction tape over the paint and traced the desired route with a pencil and then went very slowly with a Dremel. None of the paint chipped that way and you can't tell it was modified.
