How many springs are you guys using with the Spyder? I really like the overall feel, but I think it's stupid that you can't use the middle spring like on a Floyd. Four springs is too stiff, and I don't like having the claw backed out enough to compensate.
I've been messing with different 3-spring setups, but nothing ever feels quite right.... so I was curious how you guys who have been dealing with the unit longer have them set.

Took me a long time to get the right feel/balance on my three. Only 1 really makes the grade so far, by which I mean, you can pull up quite a bit on the arm in pitch as well as push down.
Number 1 HM, claw has about 2 mm gap between it and the edge where it is screwed into. 4 springs, quite stiff. Strung with 10s I think or maybe really heavy bottoms it feels like. Can't pull up on it.
Number 2 HM, Three springs (2 at top, 1 at bottom) trem claw maxed out, screwed right touching the wood of the cavity, all the way in. This works well, this is the one that works best, and my favorite. I can pull up or push down, as the Spyder block has a lot of room either side. Strung with really old 9 s I think.
Number 3 HM string with cheap 9s: Trem claw has a large gap. There are at least 4 "screw threads" visible. Using 4 springs. The actin on this one is really low. Can't pull up too much.
I'd suggst maybe trying 3 springs as it worked good for me.
All springs run straight and parallel to the cavity edge on mine. None of the
\ = /
type thing (arrow shapes) going on with my springs. I feel parallel springs work best.

As much as I like the feel and performance of the Spyder, I don't think I could say it's a good design, as getting rid of the middle spring hole is just stupid. I've never had a bit of trouble getting a Floyd to feel good.

4 springs was too stiff for me as well, so I went down to two (one on each side). That wasn't quite enough to keep it in tune. As usual, it was the G string that kept going out, so I put another string on the top and that took care of it just fine.

^ That is what I do as well. But still......ya gotta admit. A Spyder feels kinda like moving a brick compared to a OFR.

Gary - Are you saying your Tracer has a stiffy? Hahaha. Yeah, the Spyders are much stiffer and that makes me think I might try putting different springs on the CrispyCaster and see if that changes anything.
Newbies are always complaining about them, and no they don't have the best blocks, but my Ibanez Edge III Trem is the smoothest trem I've ever played. Plus the bar isn't bent as much so it's really comfortable.

Oh also, Fender makes some black, non-anodized trem springs for the Fender Deluxe 2-point trem and they are reeeaaaallly smooth and not stiff. I found a pack of them for $10 on eBay once and I think I'll try to find them for the CC.
Sometimes I wonder if the regular Floyd springs are just screen door springs they buy from Lowe's. LOL

I guess I just don't understand why they eliminated the middle spring hole. I always used the / | \ layout on my trems, and whether they were locking or non-locking, it always felt great. At the moment, I have 1 on the treble side, 1 on the bass, and a third going from the second hole on the bass side to the middle of the claw, and it's working, but I'd prefer the traditional arrangement.

Because the trem springs are a lot harder with a lot more tension these days compared to the old ones, has anyone tried the HM Strat with just 2 springs? Also Nickwellings, you say your favourite Hm Strat has the screws right against the cavity.Doesn't that make the trem bar stick out a long way? plus the strings must be mighty flat against the fret board I would have thought.
