The HM manual indicates that strings 1-4 should be 2mm +/- 0.4mm and strings 5-6 at 2.4mm +/- 0.4mm, both at the 12th fret.
My questions are these:
1) What gauge strings were installed from the factory that apply to this action?
2) What is the lowest action you guys have played without string buzz or fret out? Did you prefer higher action b/c of better string bending, etc.
P.S. I'm not worried about level frets or the like b/c I have access to a guru tech that can set it up perfectly.

Those figures sound awefully high to me!
The action on my No.2 HM strat is approx 1.4mm at the 12 fret on the bass side, and about 1.1mm on the high side.
No.1 Strat is slightly higher, due to 25 years of fret wear!

That is low! I have an early model Ibanez RG Prestige whose stock action in 2mm on the low E and 1.5mm on the high E, both at the 12th 17th fret. Even that seemed a bit high.
Do you have any problems with buzz or bent notes fretting out? Can you still "get a grip" on the strings for bends?

No problems with choking on bends, or buzzes, etc!
I bought this one 2nd hand, so I don't know whether the previous owner had it set up, but it plays really well!
My No.1 HM Strat (which I bought new in 1987) isn't quite as low, but it probably needs a re-fret. Even so, it's still my favourite to play live, as it has a very slightly darker tone (less "stratty"!)

I misread the specs in the manual. That's at the 17th fret, so it's not quite low, but it's a lot lower than it would be at the 12th fret!

When the strings go under the frets instead of over them, they are too low. Just kiddin' around. If the strings buzz too much for your preference or fret out (i.e. don't play the correct note for the fret you are playing), the strings might be too low or you might be a redneck. LOL

I forgot to add that I have a pretty strong pick attack, so it buzz is more of an issue.
