Up for sale is this somewhat-rare maple neck MIJ Fender HM Strat.
Specs:
Lightweight basswood body
Maple Neck with Maple Fretboard
24 Jumbo Frets
Black MIJ Gotoh tuners
Kahler locking nut installed
Neck width is 53mm (just under 2.25" at the body end)
25.1" (648 mm) Scale Length
Kahler Spyder tremolo bridge
Two single coil Fender USA pickups
Dimarzio humbucker bridge pickup
TBX Tone Control
Coil split switch
Side-mounted output jack
UPGRADES:
Dunlop strap locks
Coil tap pot (for variable, dial-in amounts of humbucker in bridge, VERY cool!)
New knobs
Refinished fretboard
Fender USA molded case
CONDITION:
The neck: Excellent. The jumbo frets look like new, and obviously were recently dressed. The neck had some fretboard wear (which gives it a great relic look), but was professionally relacquered. It is one of the smoothest-playing necks I've ever had the pleasure of playing. Its low action makes even a mediocre player like me play lead guitar better.
Note that there are some dings and shallow scratches on the back of the neck. They do not affect its playability at all. There was a ding on the front headstock edge, and it was patched so well I couldn't get a picture of it. The top tuner is missing its back cover, but still functions fine, as do all the other black Gotoh tuners. Finally, the Kahler locking nut works well too.
The body is in near-mint shape. I could only find one small ding on the back by the control cavity cover. Its color is amazing, too bad I just couldn't capture it with my crappy camera. It is black with gold flecks of paint in it - it really looks impressive in sunlight or under stage lights.
The Sound: This guitar screams with the bridge pickup cranked. Yet, it can also attain a standard, more vintage-like Strat sound with its single-coil pickups, making it way more versatile than a Gibson or Charvel. I didn't like the idea of replacing the coil tap switch with a pot at first, but it really grew on me. Of course, it could be replaced with a switch again (NO drilling or routing was done to its body), but try it, you'll like it. Finally, all the pots and the switch are noise-free.
The Rest: The Kahler bridge works as expected, letting you dive bomb and pump the tremolo as much as you want while staying completely in tune. I do not have a tremolo bar for this guitar (I tested it with a bar from another HM Strat I own), but these are easy to find on ebay for about $15. Except for the newer knobs and coil tap pot, this guitar is completely original. Its case has seen better days, with a dent in the front and a missing hinge in the back, but it still does the job, and I will replace the missing hinge.
