I've been (slowly) building a Vandenberg replica. Got a bunch done today. The body is finally shaped and sanded and I put on a coat of Tung Oil. Still a lot of work to do - resanding some sandpaper "scratches" out and refinishing, drilling various holes, having the trem route redone by some with proper tools, wiring, electronics, mounting pickups, etc.
Anyway, here's a pic of it this afternoon. Hard to take good pictures in flourescent lighting.

Nice nice nice nice.
I like it a lot, Jim. Is Tung going to be the final finish? I notice you're obviously using an Ibanex neck. Is that the final neck, too?

Jim that has turned out real nice! Whatcha need is one of them Peavey fluted necks in reverse like the Tracer and some Nitro models have. Think there was a maple board one on feeBay a while back for $225 or so. If I didn't love my Tracer so much I'd send it to ya. Keep an eye out on Craigslist. Usually the whole damn guitar will go for less than $200.

I like where your head's at on this one, Gary. I was trying to get a Kramer Striker Reverse Headstock neck for it but nobody seems to be selling right now. Does the Tracer have a 25.5" neck that has 24 frets? I encouraged Rick to buy one of those Vandenberg/Tracer necks and he loves it! But it is 22 frets.
In any case, I thought I'd hook up the Ibanez neck and see how I liked it and maybe down the road I can get something better, depending on how this guitar turns out as well.
Tung Oil will be the finish, Nick. I'm going to resand the whole thing and refinish now that I've gotten some good directions on how to apply the tung oil and which brand to use.
I'll take some good pictures when I'm finally done with it.

Does Tung oil offer any "protection" from knocks, say? I know poly is pretty frickin tough. Seems like oil is just for colour/appearance?

Yeah Jim it's 25.5" on the 24 fret Tracer.

Thanks, Gary. Our forum bro Rick picked one of the 22 fret versions for like $60. I will have to keep an eye out, the 24 fret version would be perfect for this guitar!

There's still a lot of stuff to do on this guitar, but I stripped the finish that was on before and reapplied a different brand of tung oil and paste finish. It looks a lot better this way. Anyway, here's where it's at now.The top horn just looks faded because of the flash.

You gonna cover the trem route in the black felt? If not, tung oil it?

Yeah, I have a piece all cut out, but I'm waiting till the end of the build to put it in. You know, "the last thing that goes in during a remodel is the carpet" philosophy. I have a little more routing to be done because the single coil route is too shallow and of course sawdust will go everywhere!

Looks damn good, Jim. Can't wait to see it, and to hear how it sounds.
