feloniusb, the first digit really looks like an N on your pic.
Judging by the staining/ghosting of the next digit, I am pretty sure you're an 88 HM, as I think the next one is 8.
But often HM's are E, or rarely, I. So really it is probably E834380.
Thanks for the really hi res pic, which made things much easier.

Thanks, Felonius B! And good luck with the parts hunting!
Thanks to Nick "Code Breaker" Wellings too, for deciphering the serial number! haha.

Hey Danny, I've not seen one before with a Serial Number that starts with "F." Are you sure it's not an "E?" Pretty hard to tell with some of these models, but if it is an "F", I'd guess Made in USA from 1990, perhaps with the last of the Made in Japan parts.
Could you tell me what color it is and what kind of fretboard? Oh, and Humbucker and two singles? Thanks!

Hey cheers for looking at that. I think it's a K actually. the stroke seems to go half way up the stem of the letter and K is one of the prefix letters of the 88 japanese ones. i know it's an 88. Apparently the jap ones start with K, L or M and the american ones start with E

Hey Felony ~
Do you remember where you saw that serial number info? From what we've seen so far the 87, 88 and 89's have the E pre-fix and they were mostly made in Japan. There's one other K in the database so far, but it was a 1990 and definitely a Made in America, as it has a Floyd on it and the digital logo.
More information is ALWAYS appreciated, Thanks!

hmmm interesting! well, i'll defer to the greater knowledge base here. I read my details here: www.strat-central.com/fmi.htm regarding the prefixes. iv'e read articles about how ALL the parts were MIJ but some were assembled in America. and then i've read an article about the californian factory churning them out 10 a day for a short period (but I don't think they specifically said anything about actually fabricating them) I found a guy with a table showng all the different prefixes and what year they correspond to but i'm stuffed if I can find it now!!! very frustrating! I'll post back here if I find it.

S# F027903 24 frets kahler locking trem s-s-h (splitable) purchased 1990, list $1199 Black owner: J. Campbell
I had always believed this guitar to be us made, but now I am not so certain, either way its still my #1 axe and I would love to have another. Serial number locators did not locate it.

Hi Steve, welcome to the forum!
Your serial number listing has been posted. Thanks for taking the time to send me the info.
As far as anyone knows, there were no HM's made in 1983. Not until 1987. What was it that leads you to believe it was an '83?
